Kapiti Day Hospital

Challenges

The Kāpiti hospital began as a concept when local residents, including health professionals and businesspeople, decided to bridge a gap in the community's healthcare provision. This included the design of an entirely new building, which would also house a cataracts and endoscopy division.

The original design, provided by Focusplan, expert medical builders and designers, comprised of several key areas. This included a reception, theatres for cataract surgery and endoscopy, first and second-stage recovery areas, an eye clinic, a multi-purpose medical room, a procedure room for treatments like varicose veins, a scrub room, a meeting room, a central sterilisation area, a kitchen, a storeroom, a staff room, and other essential facilities.

Opening on July 20th, 2023, the hospital was a major boon for the Paraparaumu region, meaning that residents would no longer have to travel to Wellington for special treatment. However, only a few months later, it became apparent that the building needed a refit to fill additional needs.

Solution

The major refit and expansion, which included the addition of a vasectomy and radiology clinic, was won by Elite Built, whilst the redesign was undertaken by Inline Architecture Ltd.

The expansion has brought more opportunities to the growing hospital and proven the adaptability of the team, working with specialist designs to ensure further equipment and care facilities could be added. It included the addition of entirely new buildings, including concrete pour and site work, as well as specialist structural steel support installed inside the new building.
